For large-scale residential projects, the primary task is to construct a suitable scene and scale, based on a shared understanding of life with the client. Even with the ample square footage, Designer Ruoqiao Chai maximized the utility of every space rather than creating empty rooms that might only be used once or twice a year. So, we don’t have any amenities such as guest room, home theatre, recreation room, or gym, we focused on better serving practical living needs. This ensures that everyone has intuitive pathways to move through, and their own space to relax or interact, while maintaining a comfortable sense of personal distance.
‘It’s almost like we’re kind of enjoying blurring the lines between architecture and art. A space that combines them both helps us find a connection to inner worlds. Based on this shared understanding, the client gave us tremendous support, and for that we’re very grateful.’Many of these masterworks, from designers like Sergio Rodrigues, Jorge Zalszupin, and Osvaldo Borsani, are making their debut in Chongqing, a metropolis in southwest China. We also designed dozens of new works, to make this house unique and specific, even though we knew it would be a very challenging process.
Ruoqiao Chai is passionate about natural materials, with white plastered walls and limestone floor, walnut panels throughout the space. Maintaining the honesty of materials is how we engage with the passage of time, and it will make this house timeless and classic. A home inevitably reflects the true nature of its inhabitant. Chai Ruoqiao firmly believes that only a long-term, essence-driven way of living can allow a home to serve the real person, rather than perform a constructed state of being.
We didn't inflate budgets for social areas or buy things just for image rather than need. Ruoqiao Chai shared this mindset completely with the client. Our hope is that in ten or twenty years, this honesty in design will keep the home looking as fresh and enduring as it does today. Our role is simply to use our skills to turn the client's vision into reality.
As a project with integrated indoor and outdoor design, it's crucial to consider how the beautiful views outside the windows influence the owner's lifestyle; the core task is to establish indoor-outdoor interaction. It brings us great joy to picture those moments: like someone sitting beside the door, watching the water fall, and simply connecting with the dynamics of nature. People always find healing in these small, beautiful moments.
The original building was a market-driven product, designed somewhat ostentatiously for the owner's taste, but redesigning a new exterior would be almost equivalent to rebuilding. Ruoqiao Chai chose to start with the doors, windows, and courtyard to improve the overall appearance. This is not a compromise, but a respect for the present situation. our starting point was the desire not to draw attention from the surroundings. And it was quite a challenge to make these changes appropriately within the building skin.
Design, in addition to focusing on function and personal privacy, also needs to deeply consider scenes. The fourth-floor living room is specifically designed for children, aiming to provide a space where they can step out of their rooms and enhance interaction with each other. It is separated from the third-floor by a suspended sheer curtain.
‘It’s something that has to be part of your design, how well it functions, the proportion, the correlation between each object, the scale of the volumes, and the underlying culture. All of that… that’s the fundamentals of design.’Ruoqiao Chai doesn't really consider himself an interior designer or architect, nor an artist. ‘Our role isn't to create a beautiful house. In that sense, we’re less like designers and more like sculptors.’ Chai Ruoqiao named his studio ‘Xinyouyi’. The name means a free heart built on self-consistency. His work primarily covers residential and commercial projects, as well as a large number of original furniture and lighting designs.
“Giving this house a new life has been a truly amazing journey, and it’s been so fulfilling to express our philosophy in this project. We hope our design can show people more possibilities about the way of living, which feels especially important in today's fast-paced world.”
